A tree came down. What now?

A tree came down or a limb is hanging. What to do first, what to photograph, and how to request cleanup quotes.

Tree on a power line, or a tree on the house right now? Stay well clear. Call 911 or your electric utility first, then send this.

What do you need?

How many trees? (optional)
Is anything close by? (optional)

e.g., leaning toward the house, dead branches, came down in the storm

First, stay safe

If a tree or limb is touching a power line, stay well away from it and from anything it's touching, and call 911 or your electric utility. Don't try to move it yourself.

Then document it

  • Photograph the tree, where it landed and any damage, before anything is moved.
  • If it hit the house, a car or a fence, call your insurance company and ask what they need before cleanup starts.

Whose tree was it?

A tree that stood in or beside the road may be a public shade tree. Call the town's tree warden or public works department. Street trees.

Moving the debris

If you're inside the beetle quarantine, tree debris and hardwood firewood can't simply be hauled out of the area. Ask the tree service how they handle it. Check your town.
